2011 is set to be a huge year for yousef, and arguably his strongest yet in the production field. after spending much of 2010 recording remixes and productions for other leading labels yousef has come back super-strong on his own seminal circus recordings proven here if needed by his latest vinyl production. it is centered on a very simple premise. taking 2 pieces of music and recreating them with yousefs indiscernibly brilliant club night in mind. a resolutely dance floor-focused ep, that combine to create a unique aural tapestry representative of the circus and yousefs own musical evolution. each is an intricate and heartfelt paean of love to circus and the huge impact it has had on both clubland and yousefs career for the last almost nine years, with the clubs birthday approaching this september. yousef says that, >the ep is a special project for me and one that is indicative of the way im progressing. getting to re-shape these tracks from some of my most respected peers has been a great opportunity to craft them with that special circus sound<

spain s javi bora has been steadily carving out a name for himself over the past few years holding up a residency at the infamous, now late space ibiza and its kehakuma parties, as well as racking up releases for elrow music, suara, robsoul, 2020 vision and moda black. here though we see him paired with fellow spaniard for a new ep set to be released via london s fledgling spilt milk recordings which has played host to material from the likes of italoboyz, alexi delano and of course its founders tred benedict and st. bernard. title-track bounze takes the lead on the record, laying the foundations with snaking synth sequences, voice atmospherics and robust rhythms before hector moralez and katal step in on the remix. the pair reshape bounze with their own stripped-back distinctive style, opting for floating pads, heavily swung percussion and snippets from the originals spoken parts. ritual rights follows and lays focus on arpeggio 303 tinged bass hits, crunchy drums and subtly unfolding synth leads that ebb and flow throughout the record. the 002 then rounds out the package with dubby stab sequences, soaring pad swells and gritty, energetic rhythms

manchester-born, berlin-based producer setaoc mass returns to his own sk_eleven imprint with his third outing on the cycles ep. here we see the artist’s propulsive brand of techno take on an extra dynamic, starting with the muscular, mind-warping drive of cyber taking control, kunfus reverts back to a highly purified, galvanising techno groove, coalescing crisp percussion and a perpetual stomp to devastating effect, whilst turning over the sci-fi indebted structured deceit adds to the strong release with its mesmerising melodies and ceaseless energy. finished of by the more downbeat, reverb-drenched, insulated mindset of escape from you.

them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.

last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

romanias iuly.b release observatory ep on visionquest, featuring three expansive originals. following an impressive run of eps on moral fiber, bouq, claque musique, memoria recordings and vatos locos, romanian artist iuly.b has impressed a number of electronic musics figureheads and is on a meteoric rise up the ranks of late, his next project leads him to team up with visionquest for his latest offering here.

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

we certainly have a soft spot and a proven track record here at all ears for these kind of magical, mysterious morsels elaborate hoax follow up last year s instant sell out 001 with another fine ep of lovingly mined tracks, expertly reshuffled for contemporary floors from a buried brazilian jazz-funk gem, to a killer early 70 s jam outta france, to a super addictive hot gossip rewire... seek, and ye shall find !

claes rosen makes a welcome return to local talk after his daydreaming release back in 2013. for his new release claes has written a beautiful house jam that s got after hours written all over it. it s melodic, soulful, spiritual but still mighty uplifting. fans of glenn underground or blaze should listen carefully. on the flip we ve got something truly special for all the real house heads - lars bartkuhn & marek bartkuhn aka needs are back on the house circuit. yup, it s true! needs are back once again and agreed to deliver a remix for local talk. back in the late 90 s and early 2000 s needs was a huge breath of fresh air to the house scene with their melodic chicago inspired house sound. the remix delivered here is again something timeless and unique, sounding simultaneously classic and new! it s a real builder, so let this one run its full course. trust us, you ll be rewarded big time!

two previously unreleased tracks from the outsider disco outfit - strange.
christopher spraggins & the strange band out of rochester, n.y released a total of one record. a spaced out druggy disco band that had a hint of rick james with a deeper trippier vibe that’s truly unique, reproduced for you here for the first time since 1978. the band was introduced to the world by cleveland unlimited records who still exist to this day, unfortunately as these things go, the record failed to gain sales needed to justify further but a whole lp was recorded, here we bring you the best tracks from that unreleased lp on your favourite format.

octave one announce new album love by machine a year after their impressive last album burn it down, detroit techno legends octave one are back with a nine track double ep that again shows they are masters of big hypnotic grooves. entitled love by machine, the albums name is a nod to the fact that the burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward thinking performers in the game today. that is all the more impressive when you bear in mind they have been active since the 80s, most often releasing on their own 430 west label, which is where they appear again here. say lenny: weve been exploring the theme of connection with this project. how technology gives us the illusion that we are closer to each other more than ever. at some point humanity crossed a line where the devices that we created to bring us together are the same devices that are blocking us from organic experiences.

son dexter is a talented producer who released two fantastic eps on larry heard s alleviated in the early 2000 s. his influences are really extensive and diverse: deep house, funk, pop, hiphop, jazz, broken beat, rock, t-bone walker, black science orchestra, miles davis, lenny kravitz, al di meola, the intruders...and you can feel that in this eternity ep. when the canadian artist sent them this 4 tracks ep, the downbeat guys could not believe what they was hearing here. 4 colourful and delicate pearls full of nuances, strength and optimism which reminds us that its possible still to find purity and unconditional love for music. house? soul? pop? just music. nothing more, nothing less.

love notes from brooklyn offers up this platter from a very exciting new brooklyn artist, subtenant. as it says on the tin, the artisanal acid ep is heavy on the 303 squelches and emotional content. each track has a unique pairing of soul and heavy acid funk. evergeen soul is the clear lead track here, using a female snippet to keep this otherwise tough little number dancefloor friendly. this track is then reworked by detroit underground darling, d marc cantu, who pitches things up into funky rave territory. the flip side sees the title track feature the most soulful chords on the entire record, and then on the b2 the artist himself takes to the mic on know how it feels. this whole ep feels live and direct from the brooklyn underground.

rotterdam based 25 places are back on dirt crew with a bang! since their love more release in 2015 the boys have been hard at work and have just released an ep for chez damier on his prescription records sub label balance. the bounce begins with party in the hills hosting a huge kick, loopy rhodes, squelching bass, ragga flavoured vocal and squeaky lead, its straight up good times right from the get go. an infectious groove on this one! closing title song heads into deep soaring territory, its forward house beat and pulsing synth lead intertwine with loose tropical percussion and a rhapsodic horn hook. on the flip we have laurence guy who does not really need an introduction anymore, the man has been all over the place since this years releases on cin cin, outplay and the imminent church where he dropped two big eps bamboo and kojak. here he takes on the soulful deep chicago house of 25 places and turns it into a 90s breakbeat acid galore of ecstasy tingled uk house. 25 places wrap up the rave session with backyard stories, a raw and bouncing, bass face inducing jam. uplifting and dirty in one stroke, its thumping kick and feverous melodies make it impossible not to move.

ltd 20216 repress ! italian producers steve murphy and dj octopus are regular collaborators, and earlier this year released an excellent split ep on chiwax. here, they return to the much adored german imprint with a proper collaborative four-tracker. theres much to admire, from the rush-inducing bounce of opener track 1 and mr lee-ish cheekiness of track 2 (check the 89 style riff, snappy drum machine groove and cut-up vocal samples), to the impeccable depth and sun-drenched warmth of the decidedly wide-eyed track 3. arguably best of all, though, is track 4, which reimagines sir james 1990 strictly rhythm classic special as an immersive chicago deep house jam.

trevision is the rare conjunction of the berlin based acts florian meindl, sierra sam and pascal hetzel in the form of a wild & gear-heavy techno live act. this first release is a result of two techno jams: in the studio and in a club using 2 modular setups, a tr909, mpc1000, delay pedal, analog rytm and moog filter. after a small editing and mastering, here is trevision 01.

italian trio raw elements debuts on resopal with two tracks on their alquemia ep. with careful consideration and an acute attention to detail, each of the tracks contributes its unique vision to raw elements first package. the title track is a high-tempo minimal techno number, picking up linear momentum verse after verse while jetlag shows the trios shadowy, percussive style. no matter the time or place, there is something here for everyone. early plays by hawtin and dubfire.

the eleventh modal analysis release introduces umwelt, with his debut appearance on the label. density ep is a 4 track release blending umwelt s unique style which is a perfect fit with the modal analysis aesthetic. industrial meets electro here, and the lyon based producer joins the sound of athens. density #1 fully reflects umwelts skills on enigmatic riffs and fat bass-lines. density #2 and density #3 sneak into the more dance-floor minded record bags, while density#4 feeds a melodic/melancholic feeling whilst hard hitting beats bring it home.

hot casa records present togo soul 70 (selected rare togolese recordings from 1971 to 1981). a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings mostly recorded in lomé during the 70’s, a fusion of traditional voodoo chants, raw soul and afro jazz. hot casa records selected 13 tracks, a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country’s recording history, including international stars like bella bellow (who even performed to maracana stadium in brazil), or roger damawuzan, compared as the james brown from lomé, and forgotten tapes and brilliant songs in mina, kabyié and fon languages. many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in togo was at the time, even if the political context influenced their creation.

gunmen is the cooperative project of junglist tony anthem and psychofreud. here they come again with another hit song, or actually two if you include the huge girls anthem featuring esco!

after the funky summer release ‘deep in’ by stephen brown, technorama records continues to promote diversity & quality music. they are back this time in the ‘electro game’ with this superb release by the french specialist dynarec.
sometimes you have artists that can electroshock you with a very good 12” and then after that they are not able to satisfy your expectations. dynarec is one of those who is capable to impress each and every time that he delivers a release. coming from france, dynarec improves on even the most advanced experimental electro as no one did before, giving it depth, awareness and knowledge, making it more rigid and linear. a journey into those post drexciya atmospheres which reach some of the highest moments in a new electro history ... romantic and complex, rich in detail and unlikely to be imitated or surpassed by others on the contemporary new electro scene.

a bonafide legend of chicago house and techno, dj skull has done the business since the early days on all manner of labels, and he s still on it now. shoring up at mentha for this no-nonsense four tracker, skull is on especially deep form here as he heads inwards with the subtle shuffle of -accent- and the insistent melodic mantras of -on the double-. the story is no different on the b side, although -rythmic- sports a more sprightly set of drums in amongst the strafing synth lines before -the unknown land- turns out one of the more eerie jack tracks of our time.

after a splendid, sought after 12- on pyramids of mars, an already expensive edits split ep with red axes and his highly original and acclaimed self released debut album -don t touch my sister-, rouge mecanique delivers a stone cold classic ep for discos capablanca. the psychedelic steady muscle of all will be changed aims to destroy visionary dance floors. sans scrupules is the most surprising acid banger you will likely hear this year. ampedusa / xaver defies description and its mutant sound could evoque ecstatic early minimal house references, kraut and concrete music. can i say is simply put the most elegant, languid way to say goodbye to an ep that exudes sheer brilliance and character. housed in hand silkscreened sleeves with art by capablanca. timeless applies here.

the two french friends, siler & dima , have collaborated on phonogramme imprint to present you their 2nd release « friends chip » ep. a first release almost 2 years ago on their own label, popcorn records, siler & dima , took a little break from producing. when the two of them finally got back in the studio, they were unsure exactly what would result, but both wanted a return to their background and the music they like to work together. a music based on sampling, with a melting pot of jazzy & funk soul influences, from moodymann to gil scott heron or donny hataway. the result is here, with 3 groovy tunes, with a strong jazz touch, influenced downbeat of the 90’s. this friends chip release is also the fruit of several collaborations. in « the hunters » you can easily recognize the unique and sexy voice of chez damier, a key influence of the french duo. in “memoory” ,the young & talented paul cut brought his keyboard science , and le loup, one of the main highlight of the french scene, appears on the last track, « willie hutch”. to bring his music knowledge and groove to the original. the result is a beautiful ep truly “friendship”
